Fabrics & Trims

For each of exterior, lining, and interfacing, you’ll need approximately ⅞ yard (80cm) of fabric with a width of 43” (109cm). Specifically, each piece of fabric should have one of the following dimensions:

  • 31 ½” x 31 ½” (80cm x 80cm), or
  • 50 ½” x 18 ½” (128cm x 48cm), or
  • 1 ¼ yd x 43” (112cm x 109cm) to self line, or make two!

Exterior fabric

  • 1 piece of fabric, dimensions specified as above.
  • Choose a sturdy, heavyweight woven, such as: calico, canvas, denim, heavy twill, or any fabric labeled bottom-weight, or upholstery.

Lining fabric

  • Optional for View A, required for View B
  • 1 piece of fabric, dimensions specified as above.
  • Use a lightweight woven, such as quilting cotton, or fabrics labeled top-weight or shirt-weight.

Interfacing

  • 0, 1, or 2 pieces, dimensions specified above.
  • Use a medium-weight fusible interfacing that’s slightly lighter than the exterior fabric.
  • Omit the interfacing when making a bag without lining, or when using an extra bulky exterior fabric. Double the interfacing when the exterior fabric needs extra support.

Bias binding

  • Required for View A, not needed for View B.
  • Approx. 3 ½ yards (310cm) of double-fold bias tape, width ⅜” - ½” (10mm - 12mm).
  • Alternatively, make your own with bias strips of width 1 ½” (4cm).

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of natural dyeing from various blog posts around the Internet, and ever since I read the recipes in the book Botanical Colour at your Fingertips by Rebecca Desnos, I decided to give it a real try. Natural dyeing...
