Hanfu Wrap Skirt, The Crescent

#ethnica #adjusta

#draft-your-own #custom-fit

The Crescent is a modern interpretation of the Mamianqun (馬面裙, “Horse Face Skirt”) — a historical Chinese garment worn from the 15th to early 20th century. It features deep, structured pleats, a fully enclosed French-seamed construction, and optional discreet in-seam pockets. Overlapping panels at the front and back, secured with an adjustable tie, provide ease of movement and a customizable fit.

This is a digital sewing pattern, not a finished product.

Custom-Fit for (Almost) Everyone

This is a custom-fit pattern based on your body measurements -- there is no standard sizing! Your absolute measurement numbers do not matter for this skirt; it's the waist-hip difference that matters. We've designed the Crescent to be pretty inclusive:

✅ works for a waist-hip difference of no more than 12 inches (30cm).

✅ works if your waist measurement is close to, or larger than, the hip measurement (instructions inside).

✅ works for kids 5 years and up (not due to size but due to safety; long ties could pose a strangulation hazard for younger children).

The skirt's ease is as follows:

  • Waist ease: 2" (5cm) for a larger waist, or 1⅛" (3cm) otherwise
  • Hip ease: about 12% of the hip circumference

The color-blocked skirt (mustard/taupe) is made from a medium-weight polyester poplin with no modifications. The model is 5"3' (160cm), with a 31½"(80cm) waist and a 39⅜"(100cm) hip.

The mint skirt is made from a mid-weight polyester jacquard with a cotton waistband. It has a 33½"(85cm) waist-to-hem, and ties are lengthened by 5"(12cm). Same model as above.

The youth skirt ("like a science experiment!") is made from quilting cotton. It's made for a 22½"(57cm) waist, 26"(66cm) hip, and 14"(36cm) waist-to-hem.

Draft Your Own

This is a draft-your-own pattern.

  • All pieces (except the pocket) are simple rectangles with markings.

  • The pocket piece is a downloadable PDF for A4/US Letter (2 pages).

Fabrics & Trims

Main Fabric

  • Crisp, light-weight or mid-weight woven.
  • For hip circumference 49”(125cm) and below: 3¼ yd (3m) for fabrics 43”(110cm) wide, and 2¼ yd (2m) for fabrics 55”(140cm) wide.
  • For hip circumference 59"(150cm) and below: 3⅞ yd (3.6m) for fabrics 43”(110cm) wide, and 3¼ yd (3m) for fabrics 55”(140cm) wide.
  • Allow more fabric if you're wider, or want to make the skirt longer.
  • Synthetics holds pleats better than natural fibers after washing.
  • No plaids or stripes.

Interfacing

  • Woven or non-woven fusible interfacing with a weight similar to the main fabric.
  • 15” (0.4m) of interfacing, at least 40” (100cm) wide.

Pocket Fabric

  • Main fabric, or another lightweight woven.
  • 13” (0.35 m) of fabric, at least 43” (110 cm) wide.
